The Group setup process consists of six steps, displayed in six tabs on the Edit group screen.
Group
This step is required to proceed to the next step. Each option has an associated help text. Hover your mouse over the red question mark to display help texts.
Here is a summary of each option:
- Name: This allows you to name the group as you please. Names may have been created by metadata entries, and as such may not make sense to use as headings for groups that are displayed on search results pages.
- Show name: This is the name that is displayed to the general user.
- Number of pages in the group: This displays how many pages are currently included in this group. If you are in the process of setting up a new group, the group will not contain any pages
Click the Update group button to save your changes and proceed to the next step in the setup process.
Metadata
This step allows you to include pages that contain a certain value in a designated metatag in a group. To find out how to select which meta tags to collect data for, please see the Site Configuration help section.
Note that through the Site Configuration procedure, it is also possible to automatically create a group for each value that occurs in designated meta tags.
Each metadata value represents one or several pages that contain that value within a metadata tag.
Tick the Include box adjacent to a metadata value to include all pages that contain this metadata value in this group. Tick the Exclude box to exclude pages. Click the Update group button to save changes.
Your actions will be reflected in the number of pages included in the group, displayed below the list of metadata values.
Body tag match
This step enables you to group html pages that share text portions or values in the Body section. You can select tags that are found in the Body section of your html pages, and include or exclude pages depending on the presence or absence of certain values within these tags.
To make use of this feature, you must first create Body tags for SearchImprove to recognize. This is done under Site configuration.
Select a body tag from the drop-down menu; then enter a value according to which pages should be included in or excluded from this group.
Click the Add button to update the group. Your actions will be reflected in the number of pages currently included in the group.
Body match
This step enables you to group html pages that share text portions or values in the Body text of the page. Groups are created by searching for a text string within the body text which has been defined in the Capture tags section of the configuration process.
Enter a text string in the input field.
Click the Add button to update the group. Your actions will be reflected in the number of pages currently included in the group.
URL match
This step allows you to group pages according to the presence of certain values in the page URL. This may be relevant if your site is arranged according to a logical site hierarchy; e.g. product pages are placed under http://www.example.com/products/; publications are placed under http://www.example.com/publications/; and so on.
Enter part of or the entire URL that you want SearchImprove to attempt to match (in the example above, entering /products/ or /publications/ is sufficient to include pages contained in those folders).
Select whether to include or exclude pages for which the URL contains this value. Click Add to update the group. Your actions will be reflected in the number of pages that this group contains.
Title match
This step allows you to group pages according to the presence of a certain word or phrase in the page title. This may be relevant if your site uses page titles to identify pages with related content.
Enter a single common word or a longer phrase that you want SearchImprove to attempt to match.
Select whether to include or exclude pages whose page title contain this word or phrase. Click Add to update the group. Your actions will be reflected in the number of pages that this group contains.
Group match
This step allows you to create parent groups out of existing groups. This may be applicable for product catalogues containing many subgroups; or for central or local government sites that want to group and subgroup parts of their site.
This page contains a list of all the groups that currently exist. To create a parent group of current groups, tick the boxes adjacent to the groups that you wish to include. Click Update group to save changes.
To add a level to your group hierarchy, create a group that consists of parent groups. You can add as many levels to the group hierarchy as you wish.
Depending on the settings that are deployed in the search package that is used to display search results, subordinate groups may either be displayed to the end user or not. Selecting a parent group will display all the groups that are contained within it, as well as pages within those groups that match the search query in order of relevancy.
For more information on controlling these settings, please see the Groups and Basic Display Options section.
