Language Features

SearchImprove includes a range of language features to help your users find what they search for.

Webmasters and webpage editors often find that typographical errors and alternative spelling methods are impossible to avoid. Users and editors alike make mistakes, or simply do not agree on terminology. With SearchImprove’s thesaurus feature, the chances of receiving satisfactory search returns are maximized – also from among documents that do not necessarily contain the user’s search term.

Typographical errors and alternative spellings

Regardless of how thoroughly documents are proofread, mistakes creep into material published on the website. Similarly, there may be search terms which users often misspell. With SearchImprove’s thesaurus feature enabled, such spelling mistakes and typos are tolerated, and results are provided which include both the correct and the alternative spelling of the search term. Subscriptions to SearchImprove include a standard thesaurus, containing the most common spelling mistakes and typographical errors, as well as recognized alternatives and synonyms. This standard thesaurus can be edited with additional words to reflect the special needs of each organization.

Integrating SearchImprove’s statistics feature

Large organizations often have a well-established language practice or policy, which may differ from that of website users. For instance, the user may perform a search for bookkeeper, which differs from the organization’s preferred term, accountant. Such differences in terminology are easily identified with SearchImprove’s integrated statistics feature. The statistics provide a picture of user search patterns, and on the basis of this, the organization can add words to the thesaurus as it sees fit.

Stemming technology

SearchImprove provides the option of using advanced stemming technology. This means that SearchImprove performs the search using the word stem to uncover all instances of the search term, in all its grammatical inflections. For instance, if a user searches for recycling, the terms recycle and recycled are included in the search. In this manner, more documents which may include what the user is looking for are included in the search, even if the ending is different from that of the search term.
